It Starts With The Scalp

We are all aware of the significance of caring for our hair, yet often the scalp is overlooked. Similar to your hair, your scalp requires cleansing, nourishment, and hydration. Neglecting your scalp can cause it to become dry, oily and irritated. As well as being uncomfortable, this can also cause dandruff and lead to issues with hair growth. Read on to discover our tips for maintaining a healthy scalp.

Cleansing the scalp

Your scalp is a little more dense than the skin on the rest of your body and has more oil glands and hair follicles. Each follicle grows a strand of hair and produces oil, which moisturises your hair and the skin on your scalp. If you are not cleansing your scalp thoroughly, oil will build up which can block hair follicles and affect hair growth.

It is recommended to treat your scalp as you would treat your skin. For example, if you have an oily scalp, try brushing your hair before you get in the shower. Brushing the hair beforehand can loosen dirt and product build up, allowing shampoos to cleanse more effectively. Another example is if you have a dry scalp, avoid using products that will strip away the scalp’s natural oils.

What causes a dry scalp?

If you suffer from a dry scalp, it is likely that your scalp is not producing enough oil and your current shampoo is washing away too much of the scalp’s sebum. Colder weather can also contribute to a dry and flaky scalp.

Tip: When washing your hair, gently massage your scalp to stimulate blood flow. This can help the scalp produce natural oils that not only prevent a dry scalp but can also promote hair growth.

Choose the right hair care products

Luckily at Ayluna, we offer two shampoos that are not only certified organic and free from harsh chemicals, but are tailored to meet the needs of an unhealthy scalp.

The Shampoo For Dandruff & Dry Scalp contains organic rosemary (which has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe dry or irritated skin, in turn reducing flakiness) and organic juniper wood oil (which has antiseptic benefits that naturally treat and relax the scalp).

The Shampoo For Sensitive Scalps contains organic witch hazel (known for its ability to soothe irritated skin and reduce oiliness).

What does a healthy scalp look like?

A healthy scalp tends to be free of flakes, without any irritation and be smooth.

An unhealthy scalp may feel irritated, look flaky and dull. In certain circumstances, an unhealthy scalp can cause hair loss resulting in patches of scalp being visible through your hair.
