Beauty Myths: Busted! Does Dyeing Your Hair Make it Grow Slower?

Here at Ayluna, we like to take care of our hair, cleanse our hair, but mostly, we like to ponder about our hair. Why? Because growing up we were taught many myths that deserve getting to the bottom of!

One that pops to mind is ‘dyeing your hair will make it grow slower!’ – but how true is that? Let’s find out.

When you dye your hair using conventional hair dyes, the chemicals strip the hair of its natural colour. Your hair’s cortex is the segment which determines the colour of your hair as it contains the pigment. However, these dyes can damage the cortex by removing the natural pigments when you add your new desired shade. This process will undoubtedly cause your hair to be weakened and in turn lead to breakage. Although your hair technically still grows at the same speed, it may appear to be slowing down as split ends can travel up your hair overtime if not dealt with, contributing to more hair loss and a perceived decline in growth.

Not to worry, you can still achieve beautifully coloured hair without the unnecessary damage when you use natural alternatives instead of harmful, chemical-filled hair dyes. Ayluna’s plant-based hair dyes use only organic and non-toxic ingredients that create a gentle glaze over your hair as to not damage the natural structure. It’s true, you really can achieve vibrant colour with added shine and volume from plants!

If you’re an avid user of hair dyes, you may have heard of peroxides, these substances are used to enhance the final outcome of the dyeing process. These chemicals, although beneficial to the colouring process, can unfortunately have negative side effects. As we know, when you use products that dry your hair, this means breakage is more likely. To combat this, either use a peroxide-free hair dye, (we’re looking at ours!) or use a moisturising hair treatment after the dyeing process. Our Cassia Plant-Based Hair Treatment provides your locks with intensive care from root to tip with a glaze of organic plant extracts. When used on light or grey hair, you may also find that it leaves a flattering colour, so you can achieve your hair goals without stripping your strands of the much-needed moisture.

So, dyeing your hair does not technically cause it to grow slower; the rate in which the hair comes out of your scalp is based on things like genetics and nutrition. What you can impact though is how long your lengths stay with you, if your hair is nourished, then it will flourish! So, we suggest giving scalp massages a go, too. When combined with our Wondertree Intensive Oil, the heightened blood flow to your hair follicles will increase the absorption of the nutritious ingredients and in turn stimulate growth. This is an organic recipe that your hair is sure to love!
